El Supremo Rum

From the fertile soils of the Paraguayan Amazon jungle, where the Iguazu Falls weave like a serpent through the jungle and fall majestically like flowing river tears, the sweet Guarani sugar cane grows to become El Supremo Rum.  These expansive, largest waterfalls in the world create a magical environment as a backdrop to where the fresh sugar cane for El Supremo rum is grown and harvested. This sugar cane was the precious secret of the Guarani tribes of ancient times.

It was when the Spanish Jesuit missionaries introduced the art of distillation to this region that the value of the Guarani Cane found its true purpose as a high-quality spirit. Then it was discovered that by ageing the cane spirit in barrels made from Incensio Marron, a native hardwood, it transformed the rum into a spirit infused with spices, earthy warmth, wild herbs and smoky nuance. Thus was born the Paraguayan Rum, which El Supremo truly represents proudly. This distillation alchemy tradition was passed down through generations and is the heart and soul behind the Rum production of this distillery, born in 1909. This Guarani secret is finally unveiled through El Supremo and is made available to the world.

The Spirits

The Distillery

Situated in asunción, Paraguay

The distillery was founded in 1909 and carries with it hundreds of years of experience passed through generations to make Paraguayan cane rum. The pure Guarani waters supply exceptional sweetness to the sugar cane, which is hand cut at its peak maturity, crushed by milling and cooked by open fire to produce a golden cane honey rich in aromas and complexities. This nectar is left to rest for 12 months before going through a 72-hour slow distillation, which develops floral aromas and ripe fruits, honeyed flavours.

The uniqueness of El Supremo is derived from the ageing in Incensio Marron barrels, the only rum in the world to use this special wood. Ageing is static, not solera like many other rums, and El Supremo is finished in French oak barrels. The rums are not blended so each batch expresses its own story. No colour added, no additives and the cane spirit is allowed to evolve on its own merits with ageing. This precious Paraguay Guarani rum, with its enduring story, is finally unveiled to the world. A rum like no other.

The People

In the Amazon jungle of Paraguay live the Guarani indigenous people. For centuries, the Guarani sugar cane was a food staple of these people. When the Spanish Jesuits arrived on their land, they brought with them the skills of distillation and discovered this precious raw material, which could be converted into something other than food. It was then that the Guarani sugar cane became a sugar spirit, which eventually evolved into Rum for consumption. With the discovery of the Incensio Marron hardwood to make the barrels to house this spirit, the rum became something sublime and sought after by the Spaniard conquistadores and mariners of the era. Through generations of the Paraguayan people, this process and knowledge were carried forth into the birth of the distillery in 1909 and have been producing these venerable rums according to traditions and skills learned over the many generations of people producing them. This is a rum representative of Paraguay and its people who produce it.
