Pedra Cancela

Pedra Cancela

The Pedra Cancela winery is part of the Lusovini Vinhos de Portugal group. The idea behind Lusovini is to produce wines from regions of Portugal that best express the region, the varieties and the people. Always keeping in mind tradition and quality but above all, sustainability and respect for the environment. Pedra Cancela is representative of the Dao region of Portugal.

Pedra Cancela belongs to the Gouveia family, who have shown a passion for wine for several generations. For many years the grapes were sold off to other wineries but in 1999, Joao Paulo Gouveia took over the helm to produce wines under their own label. It was not until 2014 that the Pedra Cancela wines were born. Today, Pedra Cancela is a big part of the Lusovini group.

The Wines

The Winery

Situated in DÃO, Portugal

When João Paulo Gouveia took over the family winery, he transformed it by restructuring the vineyards, purchasing more vineyards, modernized the cellar and refurbished the winery with modern equipment. The winery is situated on the slopes of the Dao river and the 10 hectares of vineyards are planted with 50% Touriga Nacional, the queen variety of Portugal, and the rest, mostly with other regional red grapes. Some of the vines are 40 years of age.

In 2014, the winery became Pedra Cancela Vinhos do Dão. João’s passion for winemaking and viticulture has led him to experiment with techniques and clones of grapes to obtain the best quality and style that the Dao terroir is capable of. The Pedra Cancela Dao wines show finesse, varietal character and a modern touch.

The People

Before Pedra Cancela was born, the land produced grapes which were sold off to wineries in the Dao region. It was a family-owned property which in 1999, João Paulo Gouveia became a big part of future development. Having studied enology, Joao changed the business model and the decision to produce wine under their own label was made.

He quickly changed and restructured the winery by modernizing the estate with technology and refurbishing the vineyards. He is the driving force behind Pedra Cancela and has become a big part of the Lusovini project and representative of the Dao region.
