Chateau de Laubade

Chateau de Laubade

Château de Laubade was built in 1870 in the heart of Bas Armagnac, the noblest area of the Armagnac appellation. Celebrating 150 years of existence, it is today recognized as a premier  property of Armagnac. Its storied history includes the French ambassador to Russia during the Russian revolution of 1917 and famous French designer Jeanne Paquin. This historical notoriety led the way for the Lesgourges family to purchase the estate in 1974.

The present owners have been achieving excellence with this estate for three generations. This is attributed to a philosophy of sustainability and biodiversity in cultivating the land. Château de Laubade is an undisputed reference among the Bas Armagnac category. They have been awarded the distinction of “World Class Distillery” for 10 years running by World Spirits Awards.

The Distillery

Situated in the Bas-Armagnac, France

The estate comprises 260 acres of vineyards, a Gascony oak forest, an onsite cooperage, a classic Alambic column still and extensive ageing cellars. This allows total control at all stages of high quality eau de vie production and ageing.

Vineyard management is environmentally friendly and sustainable. Distillation is all in house and carefully controlled by the master distiller. Oak is produced on the property and used in the in house production of oak barrels for ageing. The ageing process is controlled and monitored by the cellar master to ensure the finest maturation and blending of the brandies from vintage to vintage. The various finished Armagnacs are produced from a selection of 3000 ageing vintage casks. They have an inventory of vintage Armagnacs dating back to 1888.

The People

In 1974, Grandfather Maurice Lesgougues discovered Chateau de Laubade and fell in love with the estate. It was perfectly set up to become a world class leader in the region due to its history, unique terroir and well kept brandies ageing in the cellars.

When son Jean Jacques Lesgourgues took over, his goal was to restore the Chateau to its former glory. His strategy and vision was clear as he embarked on establishing the Chateau as the leading property of the Armagnac region. Through building an extensive inventory of ageing brandies, the Chateau today has the largest collection of vintage armagnacs in the region. He established the Chateau in the national and international markets, making Chateau de Laubade the go to Armagnac in all the most prestigious retail outlets and high end restaurants.

In 1998, sons Arnaud and Denis became the third generation of Lesgourgues to be part of Chateau de Laubade. Together they continue to establish the estate as the undisputed producer of Armagnac in the Bas Armagnac appellation.
