This gothic style Chateau was built in 1480 during the reign of King Louis XI. Chateau de Beaulon has been a family-owned estate under the Beaulon family name for five centuries since 1510. In the 17th century, a Chateau family member was a bishop and advisor to King Louis XIV. He assigned the Chateau under the care of the Bishops of Bordeaux and this marked a significant influence in the vineyards. Being from Bordeaux, they planted Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Semillon, and Sauvignon Blanc. This proved to be a defining moment for the Chateau as these Medoc varieties provide richness, character, and a hallmark elegance in the production of their Pineau des Charentes, which distinguishes them from their competitors.

In 1965, the Chateau was purchased but it still remains as a family business. The buildings were refurbished and the vineyards were extended and improved. In 2009, the Chateau received the environmental excellence award. Agriculture is all done organically, pheromones are used to control insect infestation and water is purified and repurposed. All Cognacs and Pineau de Charentes are produced from single vineyards, thus guaranteeing the authenticity and exceptional quality.

The Wines

The Estate

Situated in Cognac, France

The vineyards of Chateau de Beaulon strategically grow 9 grape varieties on 94 hectares of vineyards. The Chateau has stayed faithful to the region’s traditional 16th-century varietals, including Folle Blanche, Colombard, and Montils for their Cognac, while the Bordeaux varieties are used for their Pineau des Charentes.

The distillery consists of 4 small copper pot stills. All distillate is small batch and double distilled, which concentrates fruit extraction and exhibits floral characteristics, which is prevalent in their Cognacs and Pineau. The precious distillate is carefully stored in five traditional aging cellars, made up of thick stone walls, and develops into the elegant, exquisite Cognacs. This Cognac is blended with wine and aged into the rich, fruity elegance of the Pineau.

THe People

The people behind the story of Chateau de Beaulon have a long history of over 5 centuries. The Beaulon family first took over the estate in 1510 and has remained as a family-owned estate ever since. The most influential family member was heir Bishop de Nesmond who put the Chateau under the management of the Bishops of Bordeaux. They planted Bordeaux varieties in the vineyards, which marked a great point of difference from other estates.

In 1965, the present owner, Christian Thomas purchased the Chateau and quickly put it through a thorough modernization and expansion. It remains a family-owned business, ensuring the highest quality, small production, and passionate dedication to environmental consciousness.
