San Filippo

The winery of San Filippo came into existence in 1972 but the true story of this great estate did not begin till Roberto Giannelli purchased the property in 2003. A former realtor, Roberto believed that the property of San Filippo had not reached the peak of its potential and he was determined to change that. He renovated the estate while keeping it true to its original charm and tradition. The vineyard yields were reduced by 40% and he started to put his mark on the style and character of the Brunellos produced.

The estate is situated in one of the most beautiful Tuscan countrysides, just 2 kilometers from Montalcino, in the wine growing hillsides, neighbouring the storied Biondi Santi estate. The magnificent vineyards dominate the landscape which are adorned with the Val d’Orcia yellow cornfields. These cornfields have been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. The property has a guest house to develop the Agritourism and allow visitors to enjoy the charms of Tuscany while gazing into the beautiful vineyards.

San Filippo was founded in 1972 by proprietor Roberto Giannelli and is home to some of the best boutique Brunello di Montalcino. The estate has approximately 11 hectares of vines planted on mostly clay soil. As a result, his Brunello expresses increased structure and intensity common to the eastern corner of the Brunello appellation.

The Wines

The Winery

Situated in Tuscany, Italy

The San Filippo estate put its name on the Brunello map when Roberto Giannelli purchased the winery in 2003. Within 7 years he produced his ford 100pts wine in 2010 with the Brunello Le Lucere Riserva.2010. To reach this goal, he turned the winery into a state of the art facility with modern equipment and technology. He reduced vineyard yields, turned to organic farming practices and minimized the use of new oak to allow the aromatic personality of the Sangiovese Grosso to shine through and the character of the terroir to be evident.

San Fillipo has four organically farmed vineyards located in the heart of the most beautiful part of the Tuscan countryside: La Storta (north-east exposure), Le Raffiche (north exposure), Le Lucére (north-east exposure) and La Smarrita (south-west exposure). The Le Lucere vineyard is the property’s most prized site, comprising 2 hectares of vines which are situated 300m above sea level.
