Sartarelli is a 3 generation, family-run winery which began with Ferruccio Sartarelli in 1972 who had the dream and tenacity to produce high-quality Verdicchio wine. The winery is one of very few in Italy that produces only a single variety wine, Verdicchio. To this point, Verdicchio was regarded as a base, mass-produced wine. Ferruccio wanted to change this perception so he embarked on this quest to make Verdicchio a great wine. It is this tenacity, pursuit of excellence, reliability and passion that defines the Sartarelli winery.

His daughter, Donatella, took over the reins and followed in her father's footsteps to further develop his dream. Each family member has their own set of skills that contribute to the running of the winery. Today the children of Donatella are very much an important part of Sartarelli as the winery evolves through the 21st century but always keeping Ferruccio’s dream and passion alive in the production of their high-quality Verdicchio wines.

The Wines

The Winery

Situated in Marche, Italy

Their winery is built around their century-old country house located in Poggio San Marcello, surrounded by the beautiful rolling hills of the Marche region. The winery comprises 65 hectares of vineyards at 350 metres above sea level, including 6 hectares of olive groves. This area is an important wine region for the production of Verdicchio and includes highly classified Verdicchio vineyards such as Tralivio and Balciana.

The vineyards are placed on steep slopes and are kept naturally grassed to avoid soil erosion and keep the land healthy. A lot of hand work is done in the vineyard management, including green pruning to ensure the best bunches are kept and proper ventilation is attained for optimum maturation. All harvest is done by hand at the proper time and stages. The vinification process is adhered to with minimalist simplicity to allow the character of the Verdicchio to shine through via timing and winemaking techniques. Refinement takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The respect and care for the grapes and the environment are key factors in obtaining excellence, to which Sartarelli prescribes vehemently.

The People

The present Sarterelli family owners all play their own role in running the estate, but they understand that success is accomplished when teamwork moves in unison towards a common goal. Passion, tenaciousness, courage and love are the driving factors that keep the Sartarelli family and team together during the happy moments and the difficult times that are part of running a winery. From pruning to harvest, the entire Sartarelli team plays an important role in producing their exceptional single varietal wines. Their motto is that no member of the team is more important than another, regardless of their experience or title. They believe that this is the key to their success.
